SOUTH DAKOTA WILDLIFE
by TIM WALKER

More photographs from my trip to South Dakota this summer. This time I'm putting up all my best wildlife photos. From big bad bison to a teeny tiny Tamias, there were some really great chances to photograph wildlife out on the prairie. The experience of driving on the road with the entire herd of bison was surreal--for two reasons. The first was the instant size reference, and realizing that some of these males are as big as some of the cars on the road. The second reason was taking in the scene in its entirety, people stopping, getting out of their cars and gawking at these enormous animals. There was something that just felt wrong about it, and after the first few minutes of being stuck in the herd, I just wanted to be out of it. I still can't quite figure out how to reconcile the differences between wildlife photography as a venue for tourism/entertainment and it being used for conservation. I hope to end up on the side of the latter, but I don't feel as if I have crossed over that line yet.

Anyway, enough ranting...enjoy the photos!
